Nouvelles de nos Sœurs Dominicaines en Irak

Un message des promoteurs OP des USA (voir le texte anglais plus bas) nous rappelle que le 23 avril est le centième anniversaire des massacres arméniens.  On demande aux dominicains/dominicaines de sonner les cloches de leurs couvents en ce jour-là à midi en solidarité et à prier pour ceux qui sont déplacés, réfugiés, kidnappés, et trafiqués.  On nous rappelle que plusieurs sœurs furent martyrisées dans les premières années du 20ème siècle, comme il est raconté dans Drawn by Love, œuvre qui trace l’histoire des dominicaines de St. Catherine de Sienne.

Enfin, on nous transmet une nouvelle rassurante : la bombe qui a explosé près du consulat des USA à Ankawa à Erbil hier n’a pas atteint nos sœurs, bien qu’elles se trouvent à trois rues du consulat.

Our Iraqi Dominican brothers and sisters remind us that April 23 is the 100th anniversary of the Armenian massacres.  There is a plan there to ring bells on that day.

We invite you to join with them.  Ring the bells at your houses/communities at Noon on April 23 (according to local time).  Remember the Armenian victims and pray for those who have died and are dying due to political violence.  Pray for the internally displaced persons, refugees, and those kidnapped and trafficked.  100 years later Christians in the region are continuing to bear this violence. 

If you have the book Drawn By Love about the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, we suggest reading from it to learn of their history connected to this time.   Many sisters were martyred in Iraq in the early years of the 20th century. May they and the people they serve be spared in this century.

You also have probably heard about car bomb today close to the U.S. Consulate in Ankawa, a suburb of Erbil.  The convent is about 3 blocks away from the Consulate.  The sisters are safe
